Monitoring

Monitoring

Sitting around watching Task Manager all day may not seem like the most exciting of ways to pass your time but even novice users realise that when CPU is 100% constantly, something is probably not right. If we extend that slightly, users who routinely report only one or two basic applications open but still have high memory usage followed by higher than average disk usage then noticeable slowdown are probably in need of a memory upgrade or at least some maintenance work. In fact, there is no limit to what can be monitored – databases, webservers, network traffic, desktops, CPU utilisation, even the content of web pages or how much ink is left in the printer! We can provide you with smart software that will tell you whenever something is a little out of the ordinary.

But what is the point of all this monitoring? Much like the instruments on the dashboard of a car, it is critical information available at your fingertips when you need it but does not need to be watched every second of the day. There are a number of applications for monitoring but the two most common are:-

  • Early warning – get notified when your web server gets hit by a high load for example and take remedial steps before it crashes. Most users will gladly accept brief, mildly reduced service over an outage any day.
  • Resource management – this has a plethora of uses from deciding CPU allocation between virtual machines to seeing whether it is Sales or Accounting that needs the fancy printer more.
